Bettering our personal safety
Our September meeting featured Chief Deputy Troy Hershberger who gave us all some helpful tips and suggestions for bettering our self-awareness and personal safety. A few of the tips Troy shared included:
Know your surroundings and prepare mentally if you find yourself out and about… “What if something happens? What will I do? Where will I go?” Think ahead and be smart.
Be assertive. Make eye contact. It lets a potential attacker know you are confident, you see them and their face to make an identification should something happen.
Stay hands-free. When you are on your phone while in a parking lot or in a public area, you are an easy target. Being on your phone means you aren’t looking around to be aware of your surroundings.
Don’t isolate yourself or find yourself alone at peak times or places of attacks. While being out on the trail is nice, being out by yourself can leave you prone to an attack.
Trust your gut and your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right or seems to good to be true… go with that instinct and get to safety.
If someone tries to alert you while you are driving that something might be wrong with your vehicle, go to a public place before pulling over. Avoid getting out of the car or rolling your window down, especially if you are alone.
Drugs are the root of most crimes, especially addicts looking to find money or something of value they can sell for money. So be sure to store valuables out of eye sight and keep your doors locked.
